Induction of Labor

Fellowship client project

Jan 2022 – May 2022

Project Description

A prototype that includes patients getting tailored and evidence-based information based on their birth preferences and values; they will learn a little bit about induction and spontaneous birth, get asked some questions, and then learn more about on what they cared the most and be supported in making a decision that is right for them.

Problem

People that are pregnant often lack information on induction, and don’t feel like it’s their choice when it comes to making the decision.

The Team

Client - Ann Peralta

Project Manager - Shateva Long

UX Design & Research - Mingxi Wu (Sissi)

Our Goals

1. Provide options and information about induction to those who are pregnant using a digital tool

2. Make sure users are comfortable learning induction, birthing death and other useful information that can be hard to take in

Research

Reached out to 9 patients with a short survey asking about their decision making experience.

All (9) patients felt like it was their decision or one shared with their provider.

  • Two of those who said it was their decision named provider input as being very important

Quotes from patients:

“It’s really important to me that we can decide what’s right for our bodies.”

“Otherwise I felt like I was on a conveyor belt. This was the first real decision I made.”

“I knew I have the power over my own body.”

Competitor Research

I did some research online to find pregnancy apps in general. Was able to find a few on the app store that mainly helps people document their pregnancy period or baby status after birth.

User Persona

Use Flow

Low-Fidelity Wireframes (Web)

Low-Fidelity Wireframes (Mobile)

Design System

We wanted to choose colors that are gender neutral.

High-Fidelity Prototype

User Testing

After the first version of the prototype was done, I reached out to 3 patients to get in-depth feedback.

Selected Questions

1. What, if anything, caused your frustration?

2. What, if anything, surprised you about the experience?

3. Do you think the website served its purpose of helping people learn more about induction and helping them communicate with their providers in the future?

Constructive Feedback

1. Didn’t like knowing that infant death and NICU are risks at all

2. More detail on what spontaneous labor vs. induction is like

3. Missing info
- What’s healthy pregnancy?
- Do you stay in the hospital the whole time

with induction?
- What are the biggest risks and benefits? Why

would I choose one over the other?

Insights

1. Current paint points: Details on induction need to be presented, but some facts can be scary to read about for someone who is pregnant.

2. Empathy during research: Information from the tool can cause PTSD to users from their delivery experience. It’s necessary to warn them before the research and make sure the research and the tool don’t make users feel uncomfortable.

Impact

1. Got feedback that the tool contained a lot of helpful information
- “Between the tool and the conversation I have everything I need”

2. Introduced different induction methods
- “I liked that it included how this decision could affect others”

3. Letting people know that it is common to go past the due date

4. The tool helped people choose the right method
- “The tool signaled to me that I need to come prepared and that I was choosing.”
